How Motherhood Deepened My Faith

Becoming a mother has transformed my life in ways I never imagined. While I always believed in God, the birth of my son, JJ, opened my heart in a new way. Motherhood has been a powerful teacher, and through the joys and challenges, I’ve realized just how much I need God’s strength, peace, and guidance.

The NICU Experience; Finding Strength Amid Fear;                                                                              JJ’s birth was far from smooth. After a complicated delivery, he was admitted to the NICU for a few days. I had my own room to recuperate in at Nairobi Hospital, and we would visit JJ from time to time. But seeing him surrounded by tubes and machines was heart-wrenching. It was the hardest thing to witness as a new mother.

I wasn’t reading the Bible or praying much at that time. Stress and anxiety weighed heavily on me. JJ’s dad and I were also going through a rough patch, which only added to the emotional strain. Even though I wasn’t deeply connected to my faith at that moment, I couldn’t shake the feeling that God was still present, watching over JJ. In those quiet moments, I clung to the belief that God had given the doctors the wisdom they needed to help him.

Postpartum Struggles: Walking Through the Dark                                                                                    The days that followed were some of the hardest of my life. I thought things would get easier once JJ was out of the NICU, but in many ways, it felt like things were getting harder. I was struggling emotionally, dealing with postpartum depression, and feeling overwhelmed by the new demands of motherhood. It felt like everything was shifting all at once, and I was barely keeping it together.

There were days when I felt completely disconnected—from my faith, from my sense of self, even from the people around me. I didn’t pray much, and I wasn’t opening the Bible. My focus was on surviving the day, and that was enough for me at the time.

Finding Faith Again, One Step at a Time

Despite feeling so lost, I eventually realized that I couldn’t navigate motherhood on my own. Slowly, I began to turn back to God, but not in the way I thought I should. It wasn’t about long prayers or daily devotionals; it was about small, quiet moments where I felt His presence.

Looking back now, I can see that God was always there, even when I wasn’t seeking Him actively. He was holding me through the difficult days, providing peace in the middle of the storm. The experience deepened my faith, but it wasn’t a picture-perfect journey. It was messy, emotional, and filled with doubts. But through it all, God was working on my heart, even when I wasn’t fully aware of it

5 Steps to Reconnect with God During Motherhood

Encouragement for Other Moms
To every mother reading this, I want you to know that it’s okay if your journey doesn’t look perfect. Motherhood is messy, filled with emotional highs and lows. There will be days when you feel like you’re barely holding it together, but even in those moments, remember that you are enough.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28 (NIV)
God understands your struggles and offers rest. On days when you feel overwhelmed, turn to Him, and allow His peace to cover you.

God doesn’t ask us to have everything figured out. Whether you’ve been distant from your faith, too tired to pray, or simply overwhelmed by life, know that God is still with you. He doesn’t demand perfection—He simply asks that you come to Him as you are.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)
In your weakest moments, God’s strength will carry you through. His grace covers all your imperfections, and His power is made perfect when we feel least capable.

Your faith journey as a mother is your own, and it’s okay if it doesn’t look the way you thought it would. You are strong, even in your moments of doubt, and God’s love is holding you every step of the way.

“I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” — Philippians 4:13 (NIV)
Remember that through Christ, you can overcome any challenge, even the hardest days of motherhood. You are not alone in this—He is giving you strength each day.

A Prayer for You ; Lord, I lift up every mother reading this. For those feeling weary, overwhelmed, or uncertain, I ask for Your comfort and strength. Let them know that they are never alone, and that even in their hardest moments, You are with them. Surround them with Your peace, remind them of their worth, and fill their hearts with hope and love. Bless their children and families, and guide them through each challenge they face. Amen🙏
